Enemy Behavior

Enemies in Sipher Odyssey utilize an advanced AI system that creates dynamic and challenging combat encounters. Understanding how enemies behave and react to your actions will help you develop effective strategies to overcome them.

Basic AI Behavior Structure

Every enemy in Sipher Odyssey follows a core behavior structure divided into two main states:

Detection States

Non-Detect State: Enemy hasn't noticed the player

Patrols designated areas

May interact with environment

Remains passive until player enters detection range

Detect State: Enemy has noticed the player

Initiates appropriate attack sequence

Adjusts positioning based on weapon type

May coordinate with other nearby enemies

Attack Sequences

When an enemy detects you, it enters an attack sequence composed of multiple phases:

Behavior Phase

The initial non-attack movement that precedes an attack. This may include:

Charge: Preparing for an upcoming attack

Block: Moving to restrict player movement

Approach: Closing distance to optimal attack range

Signaling: Indicating upcoming attack (giving player time to react)

Movement: Repositioning to strategic location

Attack Pattern

The actual offensive action taken by the enemy:

Varies based on enemy type (Melee, Ranged, Bomber)

May include multiple strikes in sequence

Often includes a brief recovery period

Enemy Archetypes

Sipher Odyssey features three main enemy archetypes, each with distinct AI behaviors:

Melee Enemies

Melee enemies focus on close-range combat with these key behaviors:

Aggressive Pursuit: Will actively chase player when detected

Positioning: Attempt to surround the player from different angles

Attack Patterns:

Quick strikes with short recovery

Heavy blows with longer windup and recovery

Area attacks that hit in a radius

Tactical Retreats: May back off when health is low (below 30%)

Combat Tip: Keep mobile and don't let melee enemies surround you. Use dash to create distance.

Ranged Enemies

Ranged enemies attack from a distance with these key behaviors:

Optimal Distancing: Maintain ideal attack range from player

Evasive Movement: Reposition when player approaches

Attack Patterns:

Direct fire at player's current position

Area-of-effect attacks at player's location

Support fire to cover advancing melee enemies

Formation Tactics: Will try to find elevated or protected positions

Combat Tip: Close distance quickly to disrupt their attack patterns, or use cover to approach safely.

Bomber Enemies

Bomber enemies use explosive attacks with these key behaviors:

Strategic Spacing: Maintain distance from other bombers

Telegraphed Attacks: Clear visual indicators before explosions

Attack Patterns:

Lobbed explosives with area damage

Timed detonations that delay damage

Trap placement in player pathways

Group Coordination: Will spread out to attack from multiple angles

Combat Tip: Watch for visual cues before explosions and keep moving to avoid blast zones.

Advanced AI Mechanics

Aggro System

Enemies become aggressive ("aggro") based on these factors:

Proximity: When player enters the enemy's awareness range

Damage: Taking damage significantly increases enemy awareness range

Ally Alert: Nearby enemies may be alerted when one detects the player

Combat Tip: Be aware that attacking one enemy may alert others nearby.

Group Behavior

Enemies coordinate their actions with nearby allies:

Pack Tactics: Melee enemies may surround player from different angles

Cover Fire: Ranged enemies support advancing melee units

Strategic Positioning: Bombers spread out to attack from multiple directions

Morale Effects: Some enemies gain courage when in groups (scared enemies may stop fleeing when near allies)

Combat Tip: Try to separate enemies and deal with them individually when possible.

Health-Based Reactions

Enemies adjust their behavior based on their health:

Aggressive (Full Health): Focus on offensive tactics

Cautious (Medium Health): Balance between offense and defense

Desperate (Low Health): May flee or use high-risk attacks

Recovery: Some elite enemies may seek cover to recover

Combat Tip: Enemies below 30% health may try to retreat; these moments provide opportunities for pursuit or regrouping.

Enemy Type-Specific Behaviors

Melee Enemy Attack Patterns

Melee enemies follow these attack sequence steps:

1.

Initiate Approach: Move toward player

2.

Pre-Attack Signal: Brief animation telegraph

3.

Attack Execution: Deliver strike(s)

4.

Recovery Phase: Brief vulnerable period

5.

Repositioning: Adjust position for next attack

Ranged Enemy Attack Patterns

Ranged enemies follow these attack sequence steps:

1.

Optimal Position: Maintain distance

2.

Target Acquisition: Track player movement

3.

Pre-Attack Signal: Aiming animation

4.

Attack Execution: Fire projectile(s)

5.

Tactical Repositioning: Move to new firing position

Bomber Enemy Attack Patterns

Bomber enemies follow these attack sequence steps:

1.

Strategic Positioning: Space away from other bombers

2.

Target Zone Marking: Visual indicator of blast zone

3.

Charge/Preparation: Clear animation telegraph

4.

Explosive Deployment: Launch/place explosive

5.

Safe Distancing: Move away from blast zone

Reading Enemy Behaviors

Learning to recognize enemy attack patterns is crucial for survival:

Visual Cues

Glowing Effects: Often indicate charging attacks

Stance Changes: Telegraph upcoming attack types

Ground Markers: Show area effect zones

Weapon Movements: Indicate direction and style of attack

Audio Cues

Voice Lines: May indicate state changes or attack initiations

Weapon Sounds: Different sounds for different attack preparations

Movement Sounds: Can alert you to enemies approaching from behind
